🎲 How to play Story Dice with kids
Roll a few pictures and make up a story together, one sentence each, working in surprise twists.
Ages 3+ · Players 2 or more · Time 5–15 minutes · You need a cosy spot: the sofa or bed is perfect
Rules
- Roll the dice. The pictures are your story's ingredients.
- Take turns adding one sentence each. The grown-up starts with "Once upon a time…"
- When a twist arrives ("Suddenly… a dinosaur!"), work it in.
- Stop when your story finds its ending.
Make it fit the youngest player
- Ages 2–4: Two pictures and slow twists. Grown-ups can ask "and then what happened?"
- Ages 5–7: Three pictures: a character, a place and a thing.
- Ages 8–10: Four pictures and quicker twists. Try to make everyone laugh.
Nobody is ever out: a mistake becomes a wiggle or a giggle, so the littlest player keeps playing.
No phone? No problem
Each person names one thing out loud ("a dragon!", "a banana!") and the story has to use them all.
Or let the phone run it
Romparoo rolls picture dice to start the story, then chimes in with surprise twists on a timer, so nobody knows where it will go. Story Dice is one of nine games in Romparoo, a free iPhone app with no ads, no accounts and no tracking. It is coming soon to the App Store.
Play safely
Clear the floor, keep cushions low and never climb on furniture. A grown-up should always be around when little ones play.
