🦁 How to play Sleeping Lions with kids

A calm-down game: everyone lies as still and quiet as they can, and any noise wakes the lion.

Ages 3+ · Players 1 or more · Time 5 minutes · You need somewhere to lie down

Rules

  1. Everyone lies down like sleeping lions.
  2. Stay as still and quiet as you possibly can.
  3. Make a noise and the lion wakes up with a ROAR.
  4. Sleep the whole time to win, and the next round is a little longer.

Make it fit the youngest player

  • Ages 2–4: 30 second sleeps, and the lion isn't too fussy about little noises.
  • Ages 5–7: 45 second sleeps.
  • Ages 8–10: A full minute, and the lion hears everything.

Nobody is ever out: a mistake becomes a wiggle or a giggle, so the littlest player keeps playing.

No phone? No problem

One person is the lion-keeper and walks around trying to make the lions giggle, without touching.

Or let the phone run it

Romparoo listens through the microphone while the game runs (nothing is recorded or saved), so the grown-up can lie down with everyone instead of policing the quiet. If the microphone is off, a grown-up taps instead. Sleeping Lions is one of nine games in Romparoo, a free iPhone app with no ads, no accounts and no tracking. It is coming soon to the App Store.

Play safely

Clear the floor, keep cushions low and never climb on furniture. A grown-up should always be around when little ones play.
