🌋 How to play The Floor is Lava with kids

Walk and dance around the room; when the volcano erupts, get onto a cushion before the countdown ends.

Ages 3+ · Players 1 or more · Time 10 minutes · You need cushions or pillows spread on the floor

Rules

  1. Scatter cushions on the floor as safe islands. Keep them low: no climbing on wobbly furniture.
  2. While the music plays, walk, crawl and dance around.
  3. When the volcano erupts, get onto a cushion before the countdown ends.
  4. Listen for the special rule, like "only one foot!"

Make it fit the youngest player

  • Ages 2–4: The volcano always rumbles first, and you get 5 seconds to reach safety.
  • Ages 5–7: Sometimes no warning. 4 seconds, plus fun rules like "share a cushion".
  • Ages 8–10: Sneaky eruptions, 3 seconds, and tough rules like "hands and feet off the floor".

Nobody is ever out: a mistake becomes a wiggle or a giggle, so the littlest player keeps playing.

No phone? No problem

A grown-up shouts "The floor is lava!" and counts down on their fingers.

Or let the phone run it

Romparoo is the volcano: it rumbles, erupts at random, counts everyone down and says when the lava has cooled. Nobody has to be the caller, so everyone gets to hop. The Floor is Lava is one of nine games in Romparoo, a free iPhone app with no ads, no accounts and no tracking. It is coming soon to the App Store.

Play safely

Clear the floor, keep cushions low and never climb on furniture. A grown-up should always be around when little ones play.
