Living in an age of AI as a programmer

It seems obvious by now that there is one profession that every AI lab tries to automate. Programming has long been seen as something smart people can do and get paid a lot doing it. Now it seems that it ill be the first one to fall under tirelesly working AI. There are benchamrks showing the programming is going away that we will need to do something else since most of the code will be written by AI and there will be enormeous value unlocked.

I will argue that things are not as simple as that and that any value created by AI is contrained by other social, economic and also tehnical limitations.

Programming is not just a single thing

First large scale programming efforts were delicated to women. That is because the work seemed obvious, repetititve and unworthy of mans time.

There are many branches of computer science and most of those branches use some sort of programming to solve problems. Programming is a tool to create a product or solution. It is the means and not the end. So any value created by automation of programming is limited by the value of problem or solution.

Ideas are cheap, good ideas are rare and good execution is a commodity

Why do I still have a job

Some questions

  1. If anyone can create software solutions with AI why do we not see any successful projects anywhere? AI has been good at programming for 2 years now. Billions of lines of code written by AI and not a single unicorn company created by it.
